The play is set in the Dublin tenements in 1916. The main characters are a young married couple called Jack and Nora Clitheroe. Jack is a member of the Irish Citizen Army. Nora wants to move out of the tenements and does not want her husband to be involved in politics. When Jack finds out that she has destroyed a letter which informs him of his promotion to Commandant to lead an attack on Dublin Castle, he leaves the house in anger.
The story highlights the ultimate uselessness of violence and the terrible effect it has on people's lives.
